ABOUT THE NATURE CENTER

A 73.96-acre prairie rich with wildflowers and scenic vistas is being developed into a public nature center by Hood County Development District No. 1 with help from the Rio Brazos Master Naturalists and the Lake Granbury Master Gardeners and many other Volunteers.

For many years, the property near Acton was one of hundreds of sites nationwide used by the federal government to place equipment which told pilots their location. When the air navigation site was no longer needed, the federal government donated it to the county for use as a park.. The Federal requirements dictate that the land must be fenced, must have an educational purpose, and must be open to the public.

The Master Naturalists and the Master Gardeners have developed plant and animal surveys of the property. They are also helping with a master plan to maximize the history and natural science of the area. Trails are being cleared of non-native vegetation. Plans for a rainwater harvesting exhibit for wildlife watering, an area for wildlife viewing, and a hummingbird and butterfly garden are being worked on. Additional plans also include working with schools to set up student field trips.

Our ultimate goal is to provide a regional recreational park which would provide the public with a glimpse of the landscape of a century ago.
